Retraining the ways our brain and body respond to the world around us and the world inside us
We need to respond to the world to keep us safe and healthy. Sometimes our brain and body begin to respond to stimulus and situations in ways that are not healthy. Can we retrain the brain and body to respond better? That’s what the Lightning Process approach is all about and so becomes relevant to a wide range of health issues.
Over the years I have worked with a range of health issues including:
- ME/CFS
- FIBROMYALGIA
- Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)
- Extreme Noise/Light Sensitivity
- Tinnitus
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Chronic Pain Conditions
- Migraines
- Anxiety and Panic Attacks
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Digestion Problems
- Food Intolerances
- Insomnia
- Allergies including Hay Fever, Excema and Asthma
- Depression
- Stress, adrenal fatigue, adrenal burnout
Often people who are ’stuck’ with these conditions find it difficult to do anything different. This is because the stuck state has become physically part of their neurology. It’s not that people want these things, they just seem to be responding automatically. Most of what we do, say or act (our physiology and mental functioning) is automatic or unconscious, to allow us to get on with new experiences. When people are stuck, their ‘default mode’ is not serving them as it should. Even if they can get momentary success, when they drop their focus they revert to the unhelpful responses.
A drug approach attempts to affect the physiology through chemically altering the physiological response in the body that seem to be out of balance. For some this has not been effective or is not an option people are happy with.
The Lightning Process allows you to see the massive influence you have over your life and health and by addressing the things that are out of balance and by consistently using the process when required, people can rebalance and retrain their body and mind to work in a more positive and life enhancing way.
Seeing health from a different perspective.
Trigger versus response? Thing versus process?
I have worked with people with a wide range of physical and emotional conditions who all feel stuck in their health. What they have in common, is that their body and brain are responding inappropriately.
In between stimulus and response is a gap, and in that gap lies our freedom to choose how we are going to respond
Victor Frankl. Man’s Search for Meaning
In ME/CFS the body is responding to exercise as if it is a marathon. In MCS their bodies are responding to chemicals as if they are toxic. Is it the chemical or the response that is the problem? In tinnitus, there is no stimulus just a response. In PTSD they are responding to safe situations as if they are life threatening. In food intolerances they are responding to food as if it is poison. Is it the food or the response? In pain, they are responding to touch or movement as if it is dangerous. Pain is a response. In migraines, people are responding to various triggers with a pain response. Do we avoid the trigger or retrain the response?
Some interesting questions to ask yourself are:
Have others recovered from these things?
Do I avoid things because of the way I respond?
Is my current approach managing things are looking to make changes to beat it?
What’s the process behind the diagnosis? When we get a diagnosis we make it a thing. It is more often the product of a dysfunctional process. What is the process and can it be influenced?
So the Lightning Process approach might look to address why the system is on high alert or perhaps just responding inappropriately and how we can retrain the brain and body to respond normally.
When you avoid things or push through regardless you are merely managing your condition within a limited lifestyle or ignoring it. Our understanding of neural plasticity then tells us that our ‘management’ techniques unfortunately become ingrained. So we can get stuck in ‘management mode’.
The Lightning Process takes a different approach – retraining your system to respond better.
